Orang-utan contemplating mischief in the rainforest

Orangutan in the Borneo Rainforest. The name Orangutan is formed from the Malaysian and indonesian words 'orang' and 'hutan'. Orang means person and hutan means forest consequently their name means 'person of the forest'. This name is appropriate as they are closely related to humans and they spend nearly all of their lives up in the rainforest canopy, unlike other great apes which often spend time on the ground. They are slow to breed as female orangutans only have one child every eight years. This factor, coupled with the deforestation of their rainforest habitat has caused them to become an endangered species. However, Orangutans continue to fascinate mankind due to their very humanoid facial expressions and exceptional intelligence. Bornean Orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus).
