Fruit bat hanging within the branches of a shady tree. Megabats possess amazing adroitness as they sprint through the branches of trees. When they locate food, they hurl themselves across the branches, crashing through the foliage with amazing speed. They then proceed to hang upside down in traditional bat style and feed on a favourite fruit. Fruit bats only feed on nectar, blossom, pollen and fruit. Consequently they are generally only found in tropical locations where they live amongst the branches of trees.

Despite their name, fruit bats generally eat mostly nectar and pollen. Giant fruit bats are part of the mega bat family and therefore are quite different from micro bats. They have very good eyesight and often feed during the daylight hours. Fruit bats live, mate and raise their young in trees, hiding amongst the foliage, though they are quite happy clambering out onto branches in order to reach a favourite source of nectar.
