The masked bannerfish, also known as the Black and White Heniochus, is a striking aquatic species known for its elegant and attractive appearance. With its long, white flowing dorsal fin and black and yellow body, its unique aesthetic appeal makes it a favourite among marine enthusiasts worldwide. The masked bannerfish often thrives in the warm, coral-rich waters of the tropical Indo-Pacific region, stretching from East Africa to Indonesia, Japan, and Australia. It is found typically in depths between 4 to 60 meters.

This species is relatively peaceful, preferring to cohabit with its own species in small schools, although it can occasionally be found swimming alone or in pairs. Its diet primarily consists of zooplankton, algae, and other small invertebrates, making it an omnivorous creature. With a maximum length of around 23 centimetres, the masked bannerfish is relatively small, but what it lacks in size, it makes up for in lifespan, it can live for up to 10 years. This is helped by It's distinctive body pattern which serves as more than just ornamentation; it also plays a vital defensive role. The dark "mask" that covers its eyes can be misleading for potential predators, giving the bannerfish a higher chance of survival in the wild.
