Pair Short Dragonfishes, barely visible amongst the colourful coral sands of a lagoon seabed. Short Dragonfish are rarely seen due to their extreme camouflage, and relatively small population. They are found on sandy or silty sea floors and have the unusual ability to shed their skin periodically to rid themselves of accumulated ballast.

Diet: An opportunistic feeder; copepods, isopods, polycheates, nematoades, trematodes, pistol shrimp, post-veliger mollusks, foraminifera, stones up to 1 mm
Habitat: Lagoons amongst seagrass beds, sandy or silty seabeds, bays, estuaries
Distribution: Indo-Pacific: Red Sea and South Africato Marquesan and Society Islands, north to southern Japan, south to Australia and Lord Howe Island; throughout Micronesia.
